StudyWiz vs ChatGPT for homework
By the StudyWiz teamUpdated October 22, 2026How we write our pages
The short answer
If your kid is under 13, ChatGPT isn’t an option: OpenAI’s rules say users must be at least 13, with a parent’s permission until 18.
For teens, ChatGPT has added a lot since mid-2025: parental controls, safety alerts, a study mode and, in August 2026, a teen experience. But it’s still a general assistant that answers questions directly unless study mode is on, your teen can switch study mode off, and parents can’t see their teen’s chats. StudyWiz only does schoolwork, puts a hint first on every question, and shows you your kid’s homework questions.

Where ChatGPT is the better pick
- It can help with almost anything, at any level, from high school chemistry to college essays. StudyWiz covers grades 6 to 8 schoolwork only.
- It’s free to start, and many teens already use it: 59% of US teens said they use ChatGPT, in a Pew Research Center report from December 2025.
- Its parental controls let you set quiet hours and turn off memory, voice mode and image generation, and you get alerts about serious safety risks.
- Study mode, when it’s on, walks students through problems step by step instead of giving the answer.
Where StudyWiz is the better pick
- Kids under 13 can use it, with your consent. ChatGPT doesn’t allow them.
- You see your kid’s homework questions in your dashboard. ChatGPT’s parental controls don’t show you your teen’s chats.
- A hint comes first on every question. Your kid can still reveal the steps when truly stuck, but there’s no setting that turns StudyWiz into an answer machine.
- It only does schoolwork, so there’s nothing else to wander into.
- Your kid’s work is never used to train AI models. ChatGPT uses chats for training by default unless the setting is turned off.
- Practice for every grade 6 to 8 topic is built in, with rewards that give kids a reason to come back.
Can my 12-year-old use ChatGPT for homework?
Not under OpenAI’s rules. Its terms of use say users must be at least 13, and its help center says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. Teens aged 13 to 17 need a parent’s permission.
Rather than checking ID at sign-up, OpenAI estimates whether a user is under 18 from signals such as how long the account has existed and when it’s used. When it isn’t sure, it uses its teen experience.
What ChatGPT’s parental controls do
- A parent and teen link their accounts by invitation. Either one can unlink at any time, and the parent is told if the teen does.
- Parents can set quiet hours and turn off memory, voice mode, image generation and the use of chats for training.
- Extra content protections are on for teens. Parents can turn them off; teens can’t.
- If trained reviewers see signs of a serious self-harm risk, the parent gets an alert by email, text or app notification. Alerts don’t include the chat.
- Parents can’t read their teen’s chats.
Is study mode enough?
Study mode, launched in July 2025, walks students through problems step by step instead of handing over the answer, and it’s now on every ChatGPT plan. It’s a real improvement. But your teen can switch it on and off in the middle of a conversation, OpenAI has said it can behave inconsistently, and study hours set by a parent start new chats in study mode without blocking the rest of ChatGPT.
In August 2026, OpenAI also launched a teen experience with homework reminders that point teens toward study mode.
Isn’t StudyWiz just AI too?
Yes, and we say so. Wiz runs on a commercial AI model through a paid service whose terms don’t allow what kids send to be used for training. The difference is everything built around the model: it only helps with schoolwork, every problem is split into steps with a hint first, a parent sets it up and sees every question, and practice and rewards are built in.
