Homework help that gives hints, not answers

General AI chatbots often solve the problem for your kid. Wiz, the tutor inside StudyWiz, splits it into small steps and gives a hint before each one, so your kid does the thinking. Here’s how it works, with a sample you can try.

The trouble with getting the answer

When an app solves a homework problem in one go, the homework gets done but the learning doesn’t. Your kid copies the answer, and the next problem, or Friday’s quiz, is just as hard.

It happens a lot. In a Pew Research Center survey from fall 2025, 54% of US teens said they had used AI chatbots for help with schoolwork, and 1 in 10 said they do all or most of their schoolwork with a chatbot’s help. Most parents want kids to do the thinking: in a Common Sense Media survey from late 2025, 83% of parents agreed that kids need to learn to think critically for themselves, without leaning on AI.

Researchers have measured the cost. In a study published in 2025, nearly 1,000 high school students in Turkey practiced math with or without GPT-4. Students using plain GPT-4 did 48% better on practice problems, but once the AI was taken away, they scored 17% lower on the exam than students who never had it. A version built to give hints instead of answers mostly avoided that drop.

Try it: a real Wiz session

This works just like StudyWiz, with a 7th grade percent problem. Tap through it the way your kid would.

Try it: grade 7 percents

A jacket costs $40. It’s on sale for 25% off. What is the sale price?

What it’s askingFind the price of the jacket after taking 25% off $40.

  1. 1

Turn the percent into a number

Hint: 25% means 25 out of 100. Can you write that as a decimal?

What happens with every homework question

  1. Your kid types the question or snaps a photo of the page.
  2. Wiz says what the problem is asking, in plain words.
  3. The work is split into small steps, usually 2 to 5. Each step starts with a hint: a nudge or a question, not the answer.
  4. Your kid tries the step. If they’re stuck, “Show me this step” explains it.
  5. The answer comes last, with one line to remember for next time.
  6. Still confused? Your kid can ask up to 3 follow-up questions, and Wiz explains it a different way.

Isn’t showing the steps the same as giving the answer?

Not quite, and we won’t pretend the answer is locked away. A kid who is truly stuck can tap “I’m really stuck, show me everything”, because staring at a problem at 10pm doesn’t help anyone.

The difference is the order. The hint always comes first, the worked step is something your kid has to ask for, and the answer comes last. Your parent dashboard also shows your kid’s recent homework questions, so you can see how they’re using it.

Then a quick quiz locks it in

After a homework question, the Practice button opens five-question quizzes in the same subject. Your kid picks the topic, or types their own. Every answer gets instant feedback with an explanation, quizzes come in three levels (warm-up, on level and challenge), and getting 80% of a topic’s questions right earns its crown. Recalling an idea soon after learning it, and getting feedback, helps it stick.

Writing help that doesn’t write the essay

The writing coach reads your kid’s own draft and scores it from 1 to 4 on ideas, organization, evidence and conventions. It points to specific sentences worth improving, fixes small grammar slips with the rule behind each one, and suggests one next step. It’s designed to suggest improvements, not to rewrite their paragraphs.

What you see as a parent

Your parent dashboard shows each kid’s recent homework questions, quiz scores and writing reviews, with their strong and weak topics. If a message suggests your kid is upset or unsafe, you get a flag. The Parent Safety Center explains what Wiz will and won’t do.
