Grade 8 math, Common Core 8.EE.A.1
Simplify. Write each answer as a single power, then as a number when it is small enough.
Grade 8 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.
1. 7⁴ = 2,401
Subtract the exponents: 9 − 5 = 4
2. 2⁻¹ = 12
2 + (−3) = −12⁻¹ = 12¹ = 12
3. 3⁸ = 6,561
Add the exponents: 5 + 3 = 8
4. 2
Any nonzero number to the power 0 is 11 + 1 = 2
5. x⁸
Add the exponents: 5 + 3
6. 4⁶ = 4,096
Add the exponents: 3 + 3 = 6
7. 5³ = 125
Subtract the exponents: 6 − 3 = 3
8. 5⁻¹ = 15
4 + (−5) = −15⁻¹ = 15¹ = 15
9. 2
Any nonzero number to the power 0 is 11 + 1 = 2
10. 8⁶
Multiply the exponents: 2 × 3 = 6

Exponent rules are shortcuts for multiplying powers of the same base. Multiply: add the exponents (3² × 3⁴ = 3⁶). Divide: subtract them (5⁷ ÷ 5⁴ = 5³). Power of a power: multiply them ((2³)² = 2⁶). Any nonzero number to the power 0 is 1, and a negative exponent means one over the positive power: 2⁻³ = 18.
Answer: 4⁶ = 4,096
Answer: 6⁸
Answer: 3⁻³ = 127
On StudyWiz, your kid can practice exponent rules with 5-question quizzes that are checked as they go, with an explanation for every answer. When a homework problem is the trouble, Wiz gives a hint for each step instead of the answer.
