Answer key: Scientific notation

Grade 8 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. 0.00000079

Move the decimal point 7 places to the left

  2. 2. 6.3 × 10⁵

Move the decimal point 5 places to the left

  3. 3. 2.4 × 10¹⁰

    8 × 3 = 2410³ × 10⁶ = 10⁹24 × 10⁹ = 2.4 × 10¹⁰

  4. 4. 0.0042

Move the decimal point 3 places to the left

  5. 5. 0.00099

Move the decimal point 4 places to the left

  6. 6. 200 times (2 × 10²)

    2 ÷ 1 = 210¹⁰ ÷ 10⁸ = 10²

  7. 7. 4.9 × 10³

Move the decimal point 3 places to the left

  8. 8. 4.5 × 10⁵

Move the decimal point 5 places to the left

  9. 9. 2,000 times (2 × 10³)

    6 ÷ 3 = 210⁶ ÷ 10³ = 10³

  10. 10. 4 × 10⁴

    16 ÷ 4 = 410⁸ ÷ 10⁴ = 10⁴

About scientific notation

Scientific notation writes very large or very small numbers as a number from 1 to just under 10 times a power of 10: 45,000,000 = 4.5 × 10⁷ and 0.00032 = 3.2 × 10⁻⁴. The exponent counts how many places the decimal point moves. To multiply, multiply the front numbers and add the exponents.

Worked example 1

Write 5.6 × 10⁻⁴ in standard form.
  1. Step 1.Move the decimal point 4 places to the left

Answer: 0.00056

Worked example 2

(9 × 10⁹) ÷ (3 × 10³)
  1. Step 1.9 ÷ 3 = 3
  2. Step 2.10⁹ ÷ 10³ = 10⁶

Answer: 3 × 10⁶

Worked example 3

How many times bigger is 6 × 10¹⁰ than 1 × 10⁸?
  1. Step 1.6 ÷ 1 = 6
  2. Step 2.10¹⁰ ÷ 10⁸ = 10²

Answer: 600 times (6 × 10²)

Watch out for

  • The front number must be at least 1 and less than 10.
  • Big numbers get a positive exponent; numbers between 0 and 1 get a negative one.
  • After multiplying, fix the front number if it is 10 or more: 12 × 10⁵ is 1.2 × 10⁶.
