Answer key: Adding and subtracting integers

Grade 7 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. 25

  2. 2. −4

  3. 3. 20

  4. 4. 17

  5. 5. −1°F

    −12 + 11 = −1

  6. 6. −1°F

    −8 + 7 = −1

  7. 7. 34

    15 + 6 = 2121 − (−13) = 34

  8. 8. 10°F

    −11 + 21 = 10

  9. 9. 27

    Add the opposite: 11 + 16 = 27

  10. 10. 5°F

    −6 + 11 = 5

About adding and subtracting integers

To add integers with the same sign, add their distances from 0 and keep the sign. With different signs, subtract the smaller distance from the larger and keep the sign of the number farther from 0. To subtract, add the opposite: 5 − (−3) is the same as 5 + 3.

Worked example 1

1 + (−7) − 10
  1. Step 1.1 + (−7) = −6
  2. Step 2.−6 − 10 = −16

Answer: −16

Worked example 2

The temperature was −6°F in the morning and rose 20 degrees by noon. What was the temperature at noon?
  1. Step 1.−6 + 20 = 14

Answer: 14°F

Worked example 3

−3 + (−13) − 14
  1. Step 1.−3 + (−13) = −16
  2. Step 2.−16 − 14 = −30

Answer: −30

Watch out for

  • Subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive.
  • Picture a number line: adding moves right, subtracting moves left.
  • With different signs, the answer takes the sign of the number farther from 0.

Practice adding and subtracting integers online

On StudyWiz, your kid can practice adding and subtracting integers with 5-question quizzes that are checked as they go, with an explanation for every answer. When a homework problem is the trouble, Wiz gives a hint for each step instead of the answer.
