Answer key: Two-step equations

Grade 7 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. y = −8

    Add 4 to both sides: 5y = −40Divide both sides by 5: y = −8

  2. 2. n = 14

    Divide both sides by −6: n + 2 = 16Subtract 2: n = 14

  3. 3. y = 4

    Subtract 16 from both sides: 9y = 36Divide both sides by 9: y = 4

  4. 4. y = −6

    Subtract 10: y2 = −3Multiply both sides by 2: y = −6

  5. 5. x = −36

    Add 6: x4 = −9Multiply both sides by 4: x = −36

  6. 6. x = 1

    Divide both sides by −6: x − 8 = −7Add 8: x = 1

  7. 7. m = 9

    Divide both sides by −2: m − 2 = 7Add 2: m = 9

  8. 8. x = −8

    Subtract 4 from both sides: −3x = 24Divide both sides by −3: x = −8

  9. 9. y = 6

    Divide both sides by −2: y + 7 = 13Subtract 7: y = 6

  10. 10. m = −21

    Subtract 8: m3 = −7Multiply both sides by 3: m = −21

About two-step equations

A two-step equation needs two inverse operations to get the variable alone. Undo addition or subtraction first, then undo multiplication or division. For example, to solve 3x + 4 = 19, subtract 4 from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = 5.

Worked example 1

x2 − 5 = −3
  1. Step 1.Add 5: x2 = 2
  2. Step 2.Multiply both sides by 2: x = 4

Answer: x = 4

Worked example 2

−4(m − 7) = −28
  1. Step 1.Divide both sides by −4: m − 7 = 7
  2. Step 2.Add 7: m = 14

Answer: m = 14

Worked example 3

−4(x + 8) = −8
  1. Step 1.Divide both sides by −4: x + 8 = 2
  2. Step 2.Subtract 8: x = −6

Answer: x = −6

Watch out for

  • Undo adding or subtracting before multiplying or dividing.
  • Do the same thing to both sides of the equation.
  • Check: put your answer back into the original equation.
