About percent change

Percent change tells you how big a change is compared with where you started. Find the amount of change, divide it by the original amount, and write the result as a percent. If the amount went up it is a percent increase; if it went down it is a percent decrease.

  1. Step 1.Change: 16
  2. Step 2.16 ÷ 160 = 0.1 = 10%

Answer: 10% decrease

Worked example 2

  • Always divide by the original (starting) amount, not the new one.
  • The change is new minus old. Say whether it is an increase or a decrease.
  • A 100% increase means the amount doubled.
