About compound probability

A compound event is made of two or more simple events, like flipping a coin and rolling a number cube. List the outcomes in a table or tree, or, when the events don’t affect each other, multiply their probabilities: P(heads and a 6) = 12 × 16 = 112.

Worked example 1

A bag has 3 red and 2 blue cubes. You pick one, put it back, then pick again. What is P(red, then blue)?
  1. Step 1.35 × 25 = 625

Answer: 625

Worked example 2

A coin is flipped and a number cube is rolled. What is P(tails and a 6)?
  1. Step 1.12 × 16 = 112

Answer: 112

Worked example 3

Zoe has 5 shirts, 3 pairs of pants and 2 hats. How many different outfits of one shirt, one pair of pants and one hat are possible?
  1. Step 1.5 × 3 × 2 = 30

Answer: 30 outfits

Watch out for

  • Total outcomes for two events = outcomes of the first × outcomes of the second.
  • Two number cubes have 36 outcomes, not 12.
  • With replacement, the second pick has the same total as the first.
