Answer key: The distributive property

Grade 7 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. −2n + 20

    4(n + 5) = 4n + 20Combine 4n and −6n

  2. 2. 4(3x − 5)

  3. 3. 5(2x + 1)

  4. 4. 3(5n − 6)

  5. 5. 8(6x − 7)

  6. 6. 6x − 16

    4(3x − 4) = 12x − 16Combine 12x and −6x

  7. 7. 22n − 42

    6(4n − 7) = 24n − 42Combine 24n and −2n

  8. 8. 35x + 14

    7 × 5x = 35x7 × 2 = 14

  9. 9. 2(5n + 1)

  10. 10. 5(4y + 3)

About the distributive property

The distributive property says a(b + c) = ab + ac: the number outside the brackets multiplies every term inside. It works with negatives too: −3(x − 4) = −3x + 12. Factoring runs it backwards, pulling a common factor out of each term.

Worked example 1

7(x + 7)
  1. Step 1.7 × x = 7x
  2. Step 2.7 × 7 = 49

Answer: 7x + 49

Worked example 2

8(5y − 5)
  1. Step 1.8 × 5y = 40y
  2. Step 2.8 × (−5) = −40

Answer: 40y − 40

Worked example 3

−(2x − 1)
  1. Step 1.−1 × 2x = −2x
  2. Step 2.−1 × (−1) = 1

Answer: −2x + 1

Watch out for

  • Multiply the outside number by every term inside the brackets.
  • A negative outside the brackets changes the sign of every term inside.
  • Check a factored answer by expanding it again.
