Answer key: Combining like terms

Grade 7 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. 7a − b

  2. 2. −8x − 2

    x and −9x make −8x−6 and 4 make −2

  3. 3. 3a + b

  4. 4. 7y − 4

    y and 6y make 7y−8 and 4 make −4

  5. 5. −2n − 8

    7n and −9n make −2n−6 and −2 make −8

  6. 6. −12x + 10

    −3x and −9x make −12x3 and 7 make 10

  7. 7. 3x

    −3x and 6x make 3x8 and −8 make 0

  8. 8. −3a + 6b

  9. 9. −7x − 5

    x and −8x make −7x−1 and −4 make −5

About combining like terms

Like terms have exactly the same variable part, like 5x and −2x, or 3 and 7. To simplify, add or subtract the numbers in front of the like terms and keep the variable. Terms with different variables, like 4a and 5b, stay separate.

Worked example 1

5y + 2 + 12 − y
  1. Step 1.5y and −y make 4y
  2. Step 2.2 and 12 make 14

Answer: 4y + 14

Worked example 2

−6x + 6 − 3 + 9x
  1. Step 1.9x and −6x make 3x
  2. Step 2.−3 and 6 make 3

Answer: 3x + 3

Worked example 3

3x + 6 + 7x + 8
  1. Step 1.3x and 7x make 10x
  2. Step 2.8 and 6 make 14

Answer: 10x + 14

Watch out for

  • The sign in front of a term belongs to it: in 5x − 2x, the 2x is negative.
  • x means 1x, and −x means −1x.
  • Rearrange so like terms are next to each other, keeping each sign with its term.

Practice combining like terms online

On StudyWiz, your kid can practice combining like terms with 5-question quizzes that are checked as they go, with an explanation for every answer. When a homework problem is the trouble, Wiz gives a hint for each step instead of the answer.
