About scale drawings

A scale drawing shows a real object smaller (or bigger) by the same factor in every direction. The scale, like 1 inch : 25 miles, tells you how drawing lengths match real lengths. Multiply by the scale to go from the drawing to real life, and divide to go back.

Worked example 1

A model car is 8 cm long. The real car is 160 cm long. What scale was used?
  1. Step 1.160 ÷ 8 = 20

Answer: 1 cm : 20 cm (1 : 20)

Worked example 2

A floor plan uses the scale 1 cm : 5 m. A room is 10 m long. How long is it on the plan?
  1. Step 1.10 ÷ 5 = 2

Answer: 2 cm

Worked example 3

A map uses the scale 1 inch : 50 miles. Two towns are 5.5 inches apart on the map. How far apart are they really?
  1. Step 1.5.5 × 50 = 275

Answer: 275 miles

Watch out for

  • Write the scale as a ratio and keep the units with each number.
  • Set up a proportion: drawing over real equals drawing over real.
  • Areas don’t scale the same way as lengths: find the real lengths first, then the area.
