About rational numbers

Rational numbers are numbers you can write as a fraction, including negative fractions and decimals. The rules for integers still work: same signs give a positive product or quotient, and to subtract you add the opposite. For fractions, find a common denominator to add or subtract.

Worked example 1

110 ÷ (−12)
  1. Step 1.Multiply by the reciprocal of −12

Answer: −15

Worked example 2

−35 ÷ (−23)
  1. Step 1.Multiply by the reciprocal of −23

Answer: 910

Example 3

34 × (−25)

Answer: −310

Watch out for

  • Find a common denominator before adding or subtracting fractions.
  • To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal, and keep track of the sign.
  • Line up decimal points when adding decimals, even when one is negative.
