About word problems with equations

To solve a word problem with an equation, choose a letter for the unknown, write an equation that says the same thing as the words, then solve it. Many problems have a starting amount plus a rate times a number of times, like a $20 fee plus $15 a month.

Worked example 1

6 friends share a pizza order equally. Each one also pays $3 toward the tip. In all, they pay $90. What is the cost of the pizza order?
  1. Step 1.6(p ÷ 6 + 3) = 90
  2. Step 2.p + 18 = 90
  3. Step 3.p = 72

Answer: $72

Worked example 2

Mateo has $40 saved and adds $25 each week. After how many weeks will there be $265?
  1. Step 1.40 + 25w = 265
  2. Step 2.25w = 225
  3. Step 3.w = 9

Answer: 9 weeks

Worked example 3

A rectangle has a perimeter of 42 cm and a length of 13 cm. What is its width?
  1. Step 1.2(13) + 2w = 42
  2. Step 2.2w = 16
  3. Step 3.w = 8

Answer: 8 cm

Watch out for

  • Write down what your variable stands for, like “m = number of months”.
  • Look for the starting amount (the number added once) and the rate (the number multiplied).
  • Check your answer in the story, not just in the equation.
