About probability

Probability measures how likely something is, from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). When all outcomes are equally likely, the probability of an event is the number of ways it can happen divided by the total number of outcomes. Multiply a probability by the number of tries to predict how often it will happen.

Worked example 1

A bag has 7 red, 8 blue and 5 green marbles. One is picked without looking. What is P(red)?
  1. Step 1.7 out of 20

Answer: 720

Worked example 2

A spinner has 10 equal sections numbered 1 to 10. What is the probability of landing on a multiple of 4?
  1. Step 1.4, 8: 2 out of 10

Answer: 15

Worked example 3

A number cube (1 to 6) is rolled. What is the probability of rolling a number less than 6?
  1. Step 1.1, 2, 3, 4, 5: 5 out of 6

Answer: 56

Watch out for

  • Count the total outcomes carefully: a number cube has 6.
  • P(not A) = 1 − P(A).
  • A probability can never be more than 1 or less than 0.
