About absolute value

The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0 on the number line, so it is never negative. Both 7 and −7 are 7 units from 0, so |7| = 7 and |−7| = 7. Absolute value is handy for questions like “how far below sea level” or “how much was owed”.

Worked example 1

Write <, > or = to compare: |−15| ___ |−1|
  1. Step 1.15 > 1

Answer: |−15| > |−1|

Worked example 2

A diver is at −63 feet and a bird is flying at 11 feet. Which one is farther from sea level, and by how many feet?
  1. Step 1.|−63| = 63, |11| = 11

Answer: The diver, by 52 feet

Worked example 3

|−16| + |6|
  1. Step 1.16 + 6 = 22

Answer: 22

Watch out for

  • Absolute value is a distance, so the answer is never negative.
  • Work out what is inside the bars first, then take the absolute value.
  • A bigger absolute value means farther from 0, not a bigger number: −20 is less than 3, but |−20| is greater than |3|.
