About unit rates and percents

A unit rate is the amount for one: one ticket, one hour, one pound. Divide the total by the number of units to find it, and compare unit rates to find the better buy. A percent is a rate per 100, so 25% means 25 out of every 100.

Worked example 1

6 markers cost $15.00. How much does 1 cost?
  1. Step 1.$15.00 ÷ 6 = $2.50

Answer: $2.50

Worked example 2

12 pens cost $7.20. How much does 1 cost?
  1. Step 1.$7.20 ÷ 12 = $0.60

Answer: $0.60

Worked example 3

6 apples cost $4.50. How much does 1 cost?
  1. Step 1.$4.50 ÷ 6 = $0.75

Answer: $0.75

Watch out for

  • The better buy is the one with the lower price for one item, not the lower total price.
  • To find a percent of a number, change the percent to a decimal and multiply: 30% of 80 is 0.3 × 80 = 24.
  • Ask yourself if the answer makes sense: 50% of a number is half of it.
