About dot plots

A dot plot shows each data value as a dot above a number line, so you can see at a glance where the data bunches up. Count the dots to find how many values there are. The tallest stack is the mode, and counting in from either end finds the median.

Example 1

How many data values are shown? What is the median?
012345
Pets per family

Answer: 11 values, median 3

Example 2

How many values are greater than 2?
012345
Siblings per student

Answer: 7

Watch out for

  • Each dot is one data value.
  • To find the median, count dots from the left until you reach the middle one.
  • Look for clusters, gaps and values far from the rest.
