Answer key: Box plots and histograms

Grade 6 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. Min 50, Q1 51, median 55, Q3 71, max 76

    In order: 50, 51, 53, 55, 61, 71, 76

  2. 2. Min 25, Q1 28, median 34, Q3 40, max 43. The box goes from Q1 to Q3 with a line at the median, and the whiskers reach the min and max.

    In order: 25, 26, 30, 33, 34, 37, 38, 42, 43

  3. 3. Median 45, IQR 15

    IQR = Q3 − Q1 = 50 − 35

  4. 4. Range 12. About 14 of the data.

Range = max − min = 14 − 2Each part of a box plot holds about a quarter of the data

  5. 5. 14

    9 + 5 = 14

  6. 6. 22. The 60–69 interval.

    6 + 9 + 4 + 3 = 22

About box plots and histograms

A box plot shows five numbers: the minimum, the first quartile (Q1), the median, the third quartile (Q3) and the maximum. The box covers the middle half of the data, and its width is the interquartile range: IQR = Q3 − Q1. A histogram groups data into equal intervals and shows how many values fall in each.

Worked example 1

Find the five-number summary: 72, 75, 55, 74, 80, 70, 77, 79, 65
  1. Step 1.In order: 55, 65, 70, 72, 74, 75, 77, 79, 80

Answer: Min 55, Q1 67.5, median 74, Q3 78, max 80

Worked example 2

Draw a box plot of the data on the number line: 67, 55, 60, 51, 62, 49, 64, 40, 54
40455055606570
Jump distance (cm)
  1. Step 1.In order: 40, 49, 51, 54, 55, 60, 62, 64, 67

Answer: Min 40, Q1 50, median 55, Q3 63, max 67. The box goes from Q1 to Q3 with a line at the median, and the whiskers reach the min and max.

Worked example 3

How many students did 20 or more minutes of homework?
0246810120–910–1920–2930–39minutes of homeworkstudents
  1. Step 1.10 + 3 = 13

Answer: 13

Watch out for

  • Put the data in order before finding the quartiles.
  • Q1 is the median of the lower half and Q3 is the median of the upper half.
  • In a histogram, each bar counts values in an interval, not one single value.
