Answer key: Ratio tables and double number lines

Grade 6 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. 20 cups

    2 × 4 = 8, so multiply the flour by 4 too5 × 4 = 20 cups

  2. 2. 24 cups

    7 × 6 = 42, so multiply the flour by 6 too4 × 6 = 24 cups

  3. 3. Minutes: 8; Pages read: 70

The ratio is 7:1. Multiply both rows by the same number in each column.

About ratio tables and double number lines

A ratio table lists equivalent ratios side by side. Each column is the first column multiplied by the same number, so you can find a missing value by working out what the column was multiplied by. A double number line shows the same idea on two lined-up number lines.

Worked example 1

A recipe uses 5 cups of flour for every 2 eggs. Ava uses 16 eggs. How many cups of flour are needed?
  1. Step 1.2 × 8 = 16, so multiply the flour by 8 too
  2. Step 2.5 × 8 = 40 cups

Answer: 40 cups

Watch out for

  • Find the multiplier first: if 2 became 8, everything in that column was multiplied by 4.
  • You can also add columns: the 2 column plus the 3 column gives the 5 column.
  • Check that every column simplifies to the same ratio.
