About writing expressions

An expression uses numbers, variables and operations to describe an amount, like n + 5 for “5 more than a number”. Key words tell you the operation: sum and more than mean add, difference and less than mean subtract, product and times mean multiply, quotient means divide.

Example 1

k divided by 5

Answer: k5

Example 2

6 less than 7 times w

Answer: 7w − 6

Example 3

The product of 9 and n

Answer: 9n

Watch out for

  • “5 less than n” is n − 5, not 5 − n. The 5 is taken away from n.
  • A number next to a variable means multiply: 4n is 4 times n.
  • Use brackets for “times the sum of”: 3 times the sum of n and 2 is 3(n + 2).
