About mean, median and mode

The mean is the average: add all the values and divide by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the data is in order, or the mean of the two middle values when there is an even number of values. The mode is the value that appears most often.

Worked example 1

Daily high temperatures (°F): 52, 63, 59, 60, 55, 54, 63
  1. Step 1.Mean: 406 ÷ 7 = 58
  2. Step 2.In order: 52, 54, 55, 59, 60, 63, 63

Answer: Mean 58, median 59, mode 63

Worked example 2

Points scored: 16, 9, 8, 14, 16, 10, 11
  1. Step 1.Mean: 84 ÷ 7 = 12
  2. Step 2.In order: 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 16, 16

Answer: Mean 12, median 11, mode 16

Worked example 3

Quiz scores out of 100: 79, 76, 68, 73, 69, 73
  1. Step 1.Mean: 438 ÷ 6 = 73
  2. Step 2.In order: 68, 69, 73, 73, 76, 79

Answer: Mean 73, median 73, mode 73

Watch out for

  • Put the data in order before you find the median.
  • With an even number of values, the median is halfway between the two middle ones.
  • Count the values carefully before dividing for the mean.
