About ratios and rates

A ratio compares two amounts, like 3 apples for every 4 oranges, and can be written 3:4, 3 to 4 or as a fraction. To write a ratio in simplest form, divide both numbers by their greatest common factor. A rate compares amounts with different units, like pages per minute, and a unit rate tells you the amount for exactly 1.

Worked example 1

A printer prints 162 pages in 6 minutes. What is the unit rate in pages per minute?
  1. Step 1.162 ÷ 6 = 27

Answer: 27 pages per minute

Worked example 2

A shelf has 10 fiction books and 25 nonfiction books. Write the ratio of fiction books to nonfiction books.
  1. Step 1.10:25
  2. Step 2.Divide both by 5: 2:5

Answer: 2:5

Worked example 3

A parking lot has 32 cars and 20 trucks. Write the ratio of cars to trucks.
  1. Step 1.32:20
  2. Step 2.Divide both by 4: 8:5

Answer: 8:5

Watch out for

  • Keep the order the question asks for: blue to red is not the same as red to blue.
  • For a part-to-whole ratio, add the parts first to get the whole.
  • A unit rate is the total divided by the number of units: 96 pages in 8 minutes is 96 ÷ 8 = 12 pages per minute.
