About dividing fractions

To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal: flip the second fraction upside down and multiply. A quick way to remember it is "keep, change, flip": keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction. Turn mixed numbers into improper fractions before you start.

Worked example 1

16 ÷ 45
  1. Step 1.Multiply by the reciprocal: 16 × 54
  2. Step 2.= 524 = 524

Answer: 524

Worked example 2

89 ÷ 12
  1. Step 1.Multiply by the reciprocal: 89 × 2
  2. Step 2.= 169 = 169 = 1 79

Answer: 169 = 1 79

Worked example 3

1 12 ÷ 13
  1. Step 1.1 12 = 32
  2. Step 2.Multiply by the reciprocal: 32 × 3
  3. Step 3.= 92 = 92 = 4 12

Answer: 92 = 4 12

Watch out for

  • Only flip the second fraction, the one you are dividing by.
  • Write a whole number as a fraction over 1 before flipping: 4 is 41.
  • Simplify at the end, and write improper fractions as mixed numbers.
