About statistical questions

A statistical question is one you answer by collecting data that varies, like “How many hours do students in my class sleep?”, because each student gives a different answer. A question with one fixed answer, like “How tall is the flagpole?”, is not statistical.

Example 1

Did it rain at school yesterday?

Answer: No. It has just one answer.

Example 2

How many pets do the families on our street have?

Answer: Yes. The answers vary, so you need to collect data.

Example 3

How many minutes do people wait in line at the cafeteria?

Answer: Yes. The answers vary, so you need to collect data.

Watch out for

  • Ask yourself: would different people (or days, or things) give different answers?
  • Questions about one specific thing usually have just one answer.
  • Statistical questions often talk about a group: students, players, families, days.
