About negative numbers

Negative numbers are less than 0 and sit to the left of 0 on a number line. The farther left a number is, the smaller it is, so −9 is less than −2 even though 9 is bigger than 2. Opposites, like 6 and −6, are the same distance from 0 on opposite sides.

Worked example 1

Write < or > to compare: −5 ___ −3
  1. Step 1.−5 is farther left on the number line

Answer: −5 < −3

Example 2

Write a number for a deposit of $8.

Example 3

Watch out for

  • On a number line, numbers get bigger as you move right.
  • Any positive number is greater than any negative number.
  • Words like below, loss, withdrawal and decrease usually mean a negative number.
