Answer key: One-step equations

Grade 6 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. n = 21

    Add 10 to both sides: n = 11 + 10 = 21

  2. 2. y = 19

    Divide both sides by 7: y = 133 ÷ 7 = 19

  3. 3. y = 16.9

    Subtract 3.6 from both sides: y = 20.5 − 3.6 = 16.9

  4. 4. m = 19

    Add 4 to both sides: m = 15 + 4 = 19

  5. 5. m = 39

    Add 10 to both sides: m = 29 + 10 = 39

  6. 6. y = 14.1

    Subtract 4.3 from both sides: y = 18.4 − 4.3 = 14.1

  7. 7. x = 13.1

    Subtract 8 from both sides: x = 21.1 − 8 = 13.1

  8. 8. x = 28

    Subtract 9 from both sides: x = 37 − 9 = 28

  9. 9. n = 19

    Divide both sides by 6: n = 114 ÷ 6 = 19

  10. 10. k = 4.6

    Subtract 4.5 from both sides: k = 9.1 − 4.5 = 4.6

About one-step equations

To solve a one-step equation, do the opposite operation to both sides to get the variable alone. Undo adding by subtracting, undo subtracting by adding, undo multiplying by dividing and undo dividing by multiplying. Then check by putting your answer back into the equation.

Worked example 1

x + 14 = 25
  1. Step 1.Subtract 14 from both sides: x = 25 − 14 = 11

Answer: x = 11

Worked example 2

m − 6 = 7
  1. Step 1.Add 6 to both sides: m = 7 + 6 = 13

Answer: m = 13

Worked example 3

8y = 48
  1. Step 1.Divide both sides by 8: y = 48 ÷ 8 = 6

Answer: y = 6

Watch out for

  • Whatever you do to one side, do to the other, like keeping a balance level.
  • For x4 = 6, multiply both sides by 4. For 4x = 6, divide both sides by 4.
  • Check your answer: put it back into the original equation.
