Answer key: Volume of prisms

Grade 6 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. 48 cubes

    Each edge holds twice as many: 4 × 2 × 6 = 48

  2. 2. 5 ft

    Base area: 8 × 5 = 40200 ÷ 40 = 5

  3. 3. 64 cubes

    Each edge holds twice as many: 4 × 8 × 2 = 64

  4. 4. 128 cubes

    Each edge holds twice as many: 8 × 4 × 4 = 128

  5. 5. 80 cubes

    Each edge holds twice as many: 10 × 4 × 2 = 80

  6. 6. 64 cubes

    Each edge holds twice as many: 8 × 2 × 4 = 64

  7. 7. 31 12 in³

    32 × 6 × 72 = 632 = 31 12

  8. 8. 8 m

    Base area: 9 × 8 = 72576 ÷ 72 = 8

  9. 9. 40 m³

    2 × 4 × 5 = 40

  10. 10. 5 cm

    Base area: 10 × 6 = 60300 ÷ 60 = 5

About volume of prisms

Volume is the space inside a 3D shape, measured in cubic units. For a rectangular prism, multiply length × width × height. The edges can be fractions: multiply the fractions just as you would whole numbers. Counting how many small cubes fit inside gives the same answer.

Worked example 1

How many cubes with 12-ft edges fit in a box that is 5 by 2 by 1 ft?
  1. Step 1.Each edge holds twice as many: 10 × 4 × 2 = 80

Answer: 80 cubes

Worked example 2

A box is 1 12 m long, 3 m wide and 2 m tall.
  1. Step 1.32 × 3 × 2 = 9

Answer: 9 m³

Worked example 3

A rectangular prism is 12 m long, 7 m wide and 9 m tall.
  1. Step 1.12 × 7 × 9 = 756

Answer: 756 m³

Watch out for

  • Volume is in cubic units, like cm³, because you are counting cubes.
  • Turn mixed numbers into improper fractions before multiplying.
  • If you know the volume and two edges, divide to find the third.
