About multi-digit division

Long division breaks a big division into small steps: divide, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit, and repeat. Estimating first helps you check: 4,368 ÷ 12 is a bit more than 4,000 ÷ 12, which is about 330.

Worked example 1

Watch out for

  • Line up the digits carefully, one column per digit.
  • If a step gives you 0, write the 0 in the answer so the place values stay right.
  • Check by multiplying: the answer times the divisor should equal the number you started with.
