Answer key: Exponents and order of operations

Grade 6 math. Each answer has a few worked steps, to help check the method as well as the answer.

  1. 1. 17

    7 + 8 = 154 × 15 = 6060 − 43 = 17

  2. 2. 2

    5 − 3 = 22² = 44 ÷ 2 = 2

  3. 3. 8

    4² = 162 × 4 = 816 − 8 = 8

  4. 4. 85

    Brackets first: 10 + 7 = 1717 × 5 = 85

  5. 5. 2

    9 − 7 = 22² = 44 ÷ 2 = 2

  6. 6. 216

    6 × 6 × 6 = 216

  7. 7. 243

    3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243

  8. 8. 64

    Brackets first: 7 + 9 = 1616 × 4 = 64

  9. 9. 52

    7 + 5 = 129 × 12 = 108108 − 56 = 52

  10. 10. 3

    9 − 6 = 33² = 99 ÷ 3 = 3

About exponents and order of operations

An exponent tells you how many times to multiply a number by itself: 3⁴ = 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 81. When an expression has several operations, work in this order: grouping symbols first, then exponents, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right.

Worked example 1

(11 − 7)² ÷ 4
  1. Step 1.11 − 7 = 4
  2. Step 2.4² = 16
  3. Step 3.16 ÷ 4 = 4

Answer: 4

Worked example 2

7² − 5 × 3
  1. Step 1.7² = 49
  2. Step 2.5 × 3 = 15
  3. Step 3.49 − 15 = 34

Answer: 34

Worked example 3

4 × (2 + 8) − 35
  1. Step 1.2 + 8 = 10
  2. Step 2.4 × 10 = 40
  3. Step 3.40 − 35 = 5

Answer: 5

Watch out for

  • 3⁴ is not 3 × 4. It means 3 multiplied by itself 4 times.
  • Multiplication and division are done in the order they appear, left to right. So are addition and subtraction.
  • Rewrite the expression after each step, so you can see what is left to do.
